SLEDGE HISTORY

The first recorded history of the Sledge family began with Alice Simpson. She was born in Sumpter County Alabama in 1843.

It has been said that the actual "Sledge" name was chosen by Alice's son Thomas Sledge because "Simpson", his mother's married name, was a slave name. Thomas Sledge was said to have carried the last name Simpson until the age of 20.

It is also believed that Thomas Sledge, even though choosing his own last name, was actually a Sledge. During this time, there were several Sledge Plantations with slaves in Sumpter County Alabama. There was a possibility that Thomas Sledge was the son of one of the slave owners or their relatives.
